What is viscose fabric?

Viscose fabric also known as Rayon is a man-made type of fabric that is created from cellulose which has been extracted from trees. Its strength is a little weaker compared to cotton and is often used to make lighter and delicate clothing. Viscose fabric is a mix between synthetic and natural fabric due to its extraction and manufacturing process. It is one of the most soft and cool fabric since it’s blended with oil based fabric during its manufacture.


It is very hard to classify viscose fabric as either man made or natural since it comprise a mix of the two.The process is very simple as it entails regenerating cellulose a natural material extracted from trees into usable form.It was invented in the early 1890s by a French developer known as Viscos Rayon.It was not until 1924 when it was officially adopted into the textile industry.


Some of the characteristics that distinguish a viscose f include lustrous and shiny appearance with enhanced visual appeal.The fabric has a very soft touch and a feel that is similar to silk which is why sometimes it is referred to as artificial silk. It is made to be breathable meaning that it allows a fine passage of air to go through. Other characteristics include coloring well in different dyes and it is resistant to abrasion and insects. It is also known to be anti-static and has a poor stain resistance.


Viscous fabric can be used for a wide variety of uses one of them being in the use of making rugs used in homes. The fine texture and quality of materials makes it very handy with cool designs and colors. In other countries it is being used to make sarees, a popular women’s wear that is linked to culture. One of the things that makes it very popular is because it dyes quickly and retains the color hence easy to incorporate a variety of printed designs.
