5 Strange Facts about T-Shirts You Never Knew

Here are five strange facts about t-shirts:

  1. The first ever preserved garment in the history of the world is a t-shirt, which was made of linen. This t-shirt was found in the tomb of First Dynasty in Egypt. This t-shirt dated back to about 3000 BC. Flinders Petrie was the archeologist who was credited for the find. He found this in the late 1800s. According to Flinders Petrie, the t-shirt was highly sophisticated and it featured a decorative and pleating fringe.
  2. The Spanish American War was also one of the oldest times when t-shirts were used. This was the beginning of the 20th century. The United States Navy Sailors were issued t-shirts, which were crew neck and short sleeves. They were meant to be undershirts for their normal uniform. Later on, these t-shirts became a standard issue for all the new recruits.
  3. During the 1930s and 1940s, University of South California football players were given t-shirts to wear under their shoulder pads so that chafing doesn’t happen. These t-shirts got so popular that players and even other students would end up stealing these t-shirts for wearing casually due to which the school started stenciling “Property of USC” on those t-shirts. This design is still popular and can be seen even to this day!
  4. In the mid-1960s, Don Price, an advertising executive developed tie dyed t-shirt by using fabric dye. This dye was earlier used only on linens or curtains. He took those tie dyed t-shirts to 1969’s Woodstock Music Festival and created a trend in fashion that lasted for years.
  5. In the early 1970s, the reputation of New York City was of being crime-ridden and dirty. So, the government of the city hired Milton Glaser to design a new logo for tourism promotion. He designed the world famous I <3 New York Logo, which is still the most iconic t-shirt design ever.

T-shirts have had a long trip to get where they are today and they are here to stay!
